Introduction

Welcome to SCP Active Duty! We’re glad you are interested in joining us, and hope that you enjoy the game and the story-telling involved. This introduction should serve to sketch out the general aim of the RP in terms of thematic focus and to give an overview of the mechanics propelling this entire thing. The goal is not for you to memorize this in its entirety, but to serve as a reference when you're confused about something. If this guide doesn't adequately address your question, ask in #activedutyooc !

First things first: the RP's theme. If you're not familiar with the SCP Foundation (http://www.scp-wiki.wikidot.com), now's the time to start. This RP is based exclusively on the material found there, and many background questions you can't find the answers to on the Active Duty pages will be found there. What does this mean? You play the various agents and minions of a powerful, modern-day independent paranormal organization. SCP stands for Secure, Contain, and Protect, and concisely stated, that is your mission. Secure paranormal objects and entities, Contain them so that their existence is not discovered, and in doing so, Protect humanity. We shelter the populace from what it cannot possibly understand.

Fulfilling these goals is, understandably, quite dangerous. Very rarely do these entities go gentle into the good night, and the threats arrayed against you can tear you apart, mind and body. If you survive, you must cope with the consequences of stopping the world from realizing what you've done. [DATA EXPUNGED] isn't always just a black line on a page - the actions of Agents in the field do more than a permanent marker ever did to prevent the world from realizing what really is out there. The tone is, therefore, intended to be somewhat grim. The reality your characters face on a daily basis is not an especially pleasant one, and coping with both the moral ambiguity of your patron and the relentless fear of losing your mind, body, or both is intended to be a major focus of character conflict and development in Active Duty.

With a basic understanding of the themes of Active Duty, the setting can be addressed. You play a member of the SCP Foundation, assigned to Site 23, located in the Australian Outback. The SCP recruits humanity's elite from all over the world, in every area of expertise. Important to note here is humanity's elite: paranormal humanoids are to be contained (if useful) or eliminated (if not), not to work for us.

With that final note, we'll move on to the more mechanical aspects of this setup, broken down into several sections.

I. Character Creation

II. Challenge Mechanics

III. Character Advancement
